Chase Briscoe Will Race for Championship in Phoenix

October 20, 2025 | Edition #430
👋 Hey, Motorhead!
A playoff race on a superspeedway calls for drama and chaos. But surprisingly, the race at Talladega was more like a game of chess, with all the teams looking to make their move up front in hopes of a win. The Penske Fords were touted to be the favorites, but they failed to deliver.
Next thing you know, the JGR Toyotas and HMS Chevys were right there to pick up the pieces. The penultimate race at Martinsville is expected to be dramatic, but before that, let’s unpack the action from Sunday’s race.

Stage 1: The first stage had the biggest crash of the race with seven cars getting wrecked, including playoff drivers. But after the field settled in, it was Ty Gibbs who was first to the line.
Stage 2: Green flag pit cycles were chaotic, but somehow the drivers kept it clean. Chase Briscoe found himself up front and ensured he took home the precious stage points.
Final Stage: The Fords did find themselves up front late in the race. But a late caution forced overtime, and once again Briscoe was there to capitalize.
Last season, Chase Briscoe’s biggest achievement was the Southern 500 win, and he took SHR to the playoffs for the last time. Then came the move to JGR. Everyone expected him to win a couple of races, but after the Yellawood 500, the Indiana native is living his dream. Joining his teammate Denny Hamlin, Briscoe will be racing for his first championship in Phoenix after a clutch win at the high banks of Talladega.
Briscoe hasn’t been short on speed this year, and the streak of pole wins backs that up. There has been a lot of talk about team chemistry within the Toyota camp, especially JGR. However, at Dega, it was teamwork that helped Briscoe clinch his spot in the final four. With two to go in the race, the #19 car was running fifth, waiting to make a move in case chaos ensued up front.
Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson had control of the field, and then things took a wild turn. Larson’s car was low on fuel, but his crew chief assured him that they were good for the overtime run. Well, there were miscalculations within the #5 team camp as Larson just gave up his lead as he ran out of fuel. His teammate, William Byron, couldn’t fill the gap on the inside lane, and this allowed Briscoe to make his move.
The JGR driver dipped into the inside lane, and Ty Gibbs followed right behind him. Three Toyota Camrys out front, and things could’ve easily spiraled out of control. Instead, Gibbs kept pushing the #19 car while also fending off the HMS Chevy right behind him. Byron tried his best to push the lane but ended up sliding off the racetrack.
Wallace lost his momentum on the high lane but ensured that Todd Gilliland remained in his rearview mirror as they crossed the tri-oval. And that was it. Briscoe was first to the checkered flag and sealed his spot for the championship race. Yeah, the drivers avoided the Big One, but the late-race racing left the fans on the edge of their seats. Check out the blockbuster final laps of the race here if you haven’t already.

The Round of 8 finale at Martinsville Speedway is going to be a nail-biter. We have six drivers fighting for the remaining two spots, and it is all going to come down to a points scenario. A win will lock one of the six drivers in, but the last one is going to be decided on points, and things are looking sketchy after the Talladega race.
Chase Briscoe made the biggest jump in the standings. He went from +15 to locking himself into the Phoenix showdown. However, the same cannot be said for Chase Elliott. Out of all the playoff drivers, he didn’t even have the chance to add to his points tally. The worst part was that he was caught up in someone else’s mess during the first stage.
As Noah Gragson spun, it sparked a chain reaction. Elliott looked unscathed at first, but a bump by the #99 followed by another hit by the #2 car proved detrimental for the HMS driver. Here, watch the chaos unfold that might have foiled Elliott’s title dreams.
He sits at the bottom of the standings at -62, and nothing but a win will do the job for the #9 team. This wasn’t a good day for the Penske Fords. Joey Logano was dealing with irregular gear oil temperature, while Ryan Blaney had issues with his radio. These issues might look small, but at a drafting track where execution needs to be flawless, it hampered their chances for a better finish.
A 16th-place finish sees Logano below the cutline, and Blaney’s 23rd place puts him just above Elliott. Needless to say, nothing but a win will do the trick for the Penske Fords. Kyle Larson gained a point and finds himself above the cutline with a 36-point buffer. Christopher Bell just edged Larson with an extra point to secure a third-place standing, thanks to his top-10 finish.

Can Ryan Blaney Come Up With Another Clutch Performance at Martinsville to Keep His Title Hopes Alive? |

Winning a NASCAR race is an emotional feeling; we saw that last weekend with Hamlin, and Briscoe experienced something similar. The JGR driver got down on his knees and hugged his racecar. He then climbed on top of his car to celebrate the moment, and boy, oh boy, the fans in the grandstands showered the driver with cheers and roars.
Briscoe was in disbelief that he won a superspeedway race. The years of hard work and the up-and-down journey flashed right in front of him. Here, catch a glimpse of that wholesome moment as Briscoe acknowledged the support from the fans and his teammate.

Then there was Chase Elliott, who found himself at the bitter end of the stick, being caught up in a wreck. Unaware of the details of the crash, NASCAR’s most popular driver knew that he would have to do it all next weekend at Martinsville. Nothing but a win is going to get them across the line.
“I’m not sure if that would have helped us miss the wreck or not. All that’s very circumstantial. It is what it is. I can’t change it now. Just all eyes on Martinsville and try to go up there and get a win,” Elliott said after he crashed out of the race.
Christopher Bell didn’t have the best day at the office, yet he survived the crashes and was able to execute a clean race. Seeing his teammates already punch their tickets to the championship race, Bell will have a déjà vu feeling heading to the paperclip track. We all know how race manipulation tactics led to Bell’s elimination.
However, Bell focused on the positives in his post-race interview, acknowledging JGR’s improved performance this year. “Obviously, our company is hitting on all cylinders. What a great playoff run, great two weeks to get two of them locked in. Plus 37 seems really good, but you’ve got to expect a bottom-four winner. Any of us could win at Martinsville.”

Unlucky is a fitting word to describe Kyle Larson’s attempt to conquer the superspeedway tracks. Known for his craft on the ovals, the legends of Talladega and Daytona still elude him. 2025 hasn’t been his best year, but he was in a position to overturn his misfortunes. All he needed to do was see out the final two laps of the race at Talladega.
Well, the fuel mileage gamble flipped on the #5 team, and Larson had to lift off on the final lap. Now, one might say that he isn’t in a must-win situation given his position in the points tally. But Larson has seen enough races at the paperclip to prepare for the worst.
According to Larson, he was fine without a win. He would’ve been content with a top-five finish and not losing 20 spots on a single lap. Two runner-up finishes at Roval and Las Vegas, and he almost had the win at Talladega. The fuel-strategy call by Cliff Daniels could be the defining moment for Larson’s hope of a championship.
Another major upset of the day was Ryan Blaney. Now, we all know about his ability to come up with a clutch win at Martinsville, but for some reason, Team Penske seems to be off its game in the playoffs. Even when Blaney was out front with his teammate Logano, they weren’t able to control the race.
The inside lane lost momentum while Briscoe came charging from the top lane to find himself in the winning position. Fords are known for their teamwork at superspeedways, but things didn’t work out this tinme around. Blaney didn’t mince his words after the race. He called out Brad Keselowski for not helping the Penske duo.

Blaney might be a favorite to win at Martinsville next weekend, but given his points scenario, this is going to be his toughest test. With the likes of Bell and Larson also in the mix, next week’s race is going to be a thriller. And who knows, we might see more controversy and drama, like last year’s race.
