MJ and Denny Hamlin going up against NASCAR isn’t the first instance of the France family facing a rebellion. The origins of this can be traced back to 1969, at the inaugural race at Talladega Superspeedway. Richard Petty led the Drivers’ Union, known as the PDA, and asked NASCAR to postpone the race due to safety concerns. But Bill France Sr. refused, prompting all 36 PDA drivers to boycott. NASCAR responded by filling the grid with lower-division drivers and proceeded with the historic inaugural Talladega race anyway. |
