The 1987 Daytona 500 marked the last time NASCAR cars raced at their absolute limits. “Awesome Bill” was the centerpiece of that marquee event. Bill Elliott, driving the No. 9 Ford Thunderbird, clinched his second Daytona 500 victory and did so in style. Elliott recorded a pole speed of 210.364 mph, a feat that prompted NASCAR to introduce restrictor plates. The moment marked the end of an era and cemented Elliott’s status as a Daytona legend.
