Now, though, it seems the backlash against the controversial format may have finally yielded something positive. While nothing is official yet, there’s a chance we will have a new format that decides the championship.

The 2003 season marked the final year NASCAR used the traditional season-long points format to crown its champion. Matt Kenseth secured the title that year with just a single victory, relying on remarkable consistency rather than frequent wins. This, in turn, led to the creation of the modern-day playoff format, which was known as the Chase at the time.
