Criticism of the playoff format has been loud and persistent for some time. Many have proposed various ideas for tweaking the system, but NASCAR’s leadership didn’t budge. Now, though, it seems the backlash against the controversial format may have finally yielded something positive. While nothing is official yet, there’s a chance we will have a new format that decides the championship.

The 2003 season marked the final year NASCAR used the traditional season-long points format to crown its champion. Matt Kenseth secured the title that year with just a single victory, relying on remarkable consistency rather than frequent wins. This, in turn, led to the creation of the modern-day playoff format, which was known as the Chase at the time. |
