Ty Gibbs Makes His Grandpa Proud at Bristol

Publication by EssentiallySports | April 13, 2026 | Edition #695 |
Hey NASCAR Fans,
Who would’ve thought that Ty Gibbs would be able to snap his winless streak before Kyle Busch this season? Well, that is the reality we’ve got to live with for the rest of the year. And much credit to Ty for his consistent performances, which then translated into his first Cup Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Ty Gibbs deserved this win, and it didn’t come easy. Driving for JGR, you are expected to win almost every year, yet for Ty, things weren’t always simple. It took him three full seasons to finally get the momentum and convert that run into a victory. Not to forget, the comments by Chris Gabehart in the lawsuit tussle only added fuel to his cause.
This win by Ty Gibbs came on his 131st Cup start and after a streak of 5 races where he finished 6th or better. In the moment of elation, Ty remembered his late father and expressed his gratitude for the career milestone.
“It’s awesome to be with great people. To be in this position is great. I’d love for my father to have seen this. I knew he knew it was going to happen and expected it as well,” Ty said in the victory lane.
It all came down to the green-white-checkered flag and a bold call by the #54 team to stay out rather than opt for fresh tires. Kyle Larson, who had led most of the race, and Ryan Blaney, who had the fastest car, were both lined up behind him. But nothing was going to stop Ty Gibbs from claiming his first Cup Series win.
For Coach Gibbs, this feeling was perhaps even greater than winning the championship. The veteran owner felt similar emotion when Denny Hamlin dedicated his 2019 Daytona 500 win to J. D. Gibbs.

Kyle Larson once again came up with the speed at Thunder Valley. From an eighth-place starting position, he quickly mounted his charge for the lead, and he was controlling the field after 44 laps. Next thing you know, he swept both stage 1 and 2, and it looked like last year’s script was repeating all over again.
But with 24 laps to go, Larson’s teammate, Chase Elliott, spun himself and brought the caution. The No. 5 team opted for two tires, whereas Blaney took four. This was a similar strategy that this team opted for last year in Phoenix to clinch the championship. The only difference here was that they ended up on the losing side.
Even on older ties, Ty Gibbs held his own and was able to clinch a famous win to his name. It is worth noting that Larson eclipsed 1000 laps led at Bristol in the Next-Gen era, yet he wasn’t the one celebrating in the victory lane.

The Food City 500 race at Bristol led to big changes in the standings, and a similar trend continued with our weekly challenge.
Once again, the participants made some bold picks, and now we have our results.

Despite being at a tire disadvantage, Ty Gibbs managed to keep his nose ahead and run the high line to fend off both Larson and Blaney. The only way either of the two could topple the leader was by using their bumper. But given how chaos-free the race was, the fans didn’t get to see a rather dramatic race finish.

The Food City 500 led to some big changes in the leaderboard, and mind you, every point matters to qualify for the Chase. As of now, we will focus on the top contenders who can clinch the regular-season title. Later in the season, we will shift our attention to the Chase bubble and drivers who can make it into the top 16.
Bubba Wallace made the big moves. He jumped three spots with the 11th-place finish and now finds himself 8th in the points standings.
Larson has a similar trajectory. Stage sweeps and a third-place finish helped him climb to 6th in the points standings.
Brad Keselowski dropped out of the top 10, and the top three (Blaney, Hamlin, Reddick) remained unchanged.
