Darlington Raceway opened in 1950, built by Harold Brasington to create a premier stock car racing venue similar to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was NASCAR's first paved track longer than one mile and featured a unique egg-shaped design caused by preserving a nearby pond. The inaugural Southern 500 race in September 1950 featured 75 cars, drawing large crowds and setting a record purse. Darlington quickly earned the nickname "The Track Too Tough to Tame" due to its challenging layout. Its creation marked the beginning of superspeedway racing in NASCAR, influencing future track designs and race strategies. |
